The France Quarter of Grand-Bassam is characterized by its remarkably well-preserved colonial architecture. It is made up of historic buildings that once served the colonists when the city was the capital of Côte d'Ivoire under French colonial rule, from 1893 to 1900. It was also the residence of all the Governors who succeeded one another during that era.
