You may often hear that this building was constructed by the French during the colonial period. To tell the truth, this house was built in 1900 by a national from the Gold Coast (present-day Ghana). It was purchased in 1920 by Mr. Ganamet, a prominent Lebanese-Syrian merchant who made modifications to it and gave it a style reminiscent of the Middle East. Through the sale of liqueur made from kola nuts, he became the wealthiest trader of his time. Up until the 1980s, this place served as a storage facility for kola nuts.
