THE SACRED CATFISH OF BOKORE

0 Review
Description

Bokoré is a village in the town of Tanda, located in the North-East of Côte d'Ivoire. One of the most remarkable features of this village is its sacred fish. It is strictly forbidden to fish for or eat these catfish. These fish can live up to 20 years and can weigh over 100 kg.  When you ask why these fish are considered sacred, the elders of Bokoré explain the story: "According to our ancestors and the tradition that has been passed down to us, these fish are in reality human beings. They are men who have taken the form of these fish. In truth, they serve to protect both the village and the town." If this story intrigues you, you are not alone — the villagers themselves feel the very same way.
