In front of the royal court of Bonoua, you will find a statue paying tribute to a great man. Wondering who it is? It is the warrior Kadjo Amongoua. During the colonial era, individuals like him strongly opposed the establishment of colonial settlers in the country. For the Abourré people, he stands as a symbol of resistance against colonialism. As far as he was concerned, there was no question of compromising by accepting any foreign presence — a stand had to be made. Deemed a nuisance, the French deported him to Gabon, where he passed away in 1909 from a pain crisis (officially), though members of his family contest this account, claiming he died by poisoning.
